The Phase Converter
Manufacturer Directory
Digital-Phase Converters
Digital-phase converters are
electronic and
non-mechanical in nature and
are a recently new concept
in balancing electrical
three-phase power. They
provide a decent balanced
three-phase load, and they
are very quiet. One of the
drawbacks is that they work by
taking a sine wave and
chopping it up, which produces
somewhat of a choppy
synthesized three-phase sine
wave. By producing choppy
synthesized sine waves, the
harmonic distortion tends to
be greater.
The digital-phase converter
works by using software that
monitors and adjusts voltages
to produce a balanced,
three-phase output at all times.
The software also provides a
protective function by
shutting down in case of a
surge or loss of voltage.
Because of their sensitive
equipment, the shut-down can
be frequent and can cause
downtime for you or your
business. Downtime for
most businesses means loss of
revenue.
In our manufacturer review,
you can see we did not rate
product quality very high.
One reason is because of
the sensitive complex
electronic nature of the
digital-phase converter.
They can
experience burnout by power surges and
lightning strikes even with
their protective software we
mentioned above. The sensitive
electronics causes life span
to be much shorter, and in
turn, some manufacturers do not
offer as long of a warranty.
Digital-phase converters are also more expensive
to buy and repair.
There are a limited number
of repair depots, and this can cause
extended and costly downtime
in the event of damage.
Digital-phase converters are also limited
in the
amount of power they can
produce. If you need to supply a
large amount of three-phase power,
digital-phase converters may
not be your best choice.
The following chart compares
each manufacturer based on a phase
converter for a
10HP motor. We rated each
company with a one to five
star rating, five stars being the highest
and one star the
lowest.
*Compared models that use active generators
and found that they are higher
quality - this rating is not
for lesser quality converters
using electric motors.
Also, models rated on the materials
used to manufacturer the
phase converters.

ratings are determined.
In
our findings,
ACE
Phase Converters
rated the highest because
they manufacturer a true
three-phase converter. Their phase converters were
durable and manufactured
with high quality materials,
and their ten-year warranties
on their products were
outstanding. Pricing was
excellent comparably in the
market place.
